Huddleston and Kraft retire from Fairfield Glade golf operations

FLOP SHOTS

By Ed Lewis

Greetings to the many golf fans who read this fine publication,
which is published in the Tennessee county known as “The Golf Capital of Tennessee.” It’s an honor Cumberland County deserves.

All of us who are slaves to the game, are aware that the weather has not been our friend lately, but many great golfing days will soon be upon us.  We are all looking forward to swinging our clubs and hoping for a few more birdies this year than last. Cumberland County courses have done necessary
maintenance as they prepare for another great year. We are blessed with beautiful, well-defined, “Spring seasons” in Tennessee with Dogwoods and Redbuds abloom.

Among the not-too-recent golf news from the Glade, is the retirement of Sr. Pro Warren Huddleston and Golf Director Steve Kraft. Both provided many years of service to our community. The new Sr. Pro and Golf Director is Crossville Native Jeff Houston, who has been at the Glade for 25 years. We wish him the best. Also we want to recognize Rags Jones as the new Head Pro at Druid and Jeremy Jones as the the new head pro at Heatherhurst.

Jeff brings much knowledge and experience to his new
position and is off to a great start.  He has two offices, one at Druid Hills and another at Stonehenge, which is one of the courses currently closed until March.  Jeff also continues in his position as the head professional at Stonehenge.

Some of the 124 Glade leagues play year-round, and could be playing as you read this column. These are the “hardened” players and I salute them, but the temp has to be above 45 before I will even think of playing. Our many timeshare visitors are also active during this time. We are fortunate to have units occupied, keeping central tee times busy during the winter months. For reservations please call 484-3729 or 800-624-8755.

140,000 Rounds
Last year, approximately 140,000 rounds were played at the Glade’s five fine courses, and our visitors accounted for approximately 20% of that total.  Several golf packages are available.

Information on the many golfing activities, including leagues, local and state tournaments, weekly instructional clinics, shootouts with the pros, etc. is available on the website
Fairfield Glade .  Information is also posted at the Glade’s clubhouses.

This column will attempt to keep up with some of the unique (and weird) and outstanding rounds and scores, but I will need your help. Whenever someone in your group has that rare double eagle or accomplishes some other feat worth writing about, please get that info to me for my column, which will appear in each issue of Crossville Life.

Special recognition will not be limited to aces, aka Hole-in-Ones, but will include exceptional shots, extra long drives, eagles and “low” or record rounds.  It could even be a question about a rule. Calls and e-mails from golfers and courses throughout the county are welcomed  (931-335-8879 and e-mail is [email protected]).

Sr. Olympics
Information on local and state Senior Games, which are open to all citizens age 50 and over, will also be included.  As a participant in the Senior Games, I strongly recommend all eligible participants to consider golf and the numerous other events that comprise these games.  Many of the district games are in Crossville and lead to state and national events.  Last year golf was played at the Glade’s Heatherhurst courses. Information on registration of events will be in the next issue.

Wishing all readers, especially golfers, a happy, successful year. Your tee times and outstanding play await.

Keep it in the short grass!
