PALM HARBOR, Florida-A former area collegiate golfer recently finished third in the PGA tour stop played on the Copperhead South Course here.
Scott Stallings, a former Tennessee Tech All-American, fired a final round, one-under par 70 to take solo third in the Transitions Championship. Stallings was playing on a sponsor’s exemption, and made the most of it, finishing with a 12-under-par 272 on what is considered one of the toughest courses on the PGA tour. He also carded a hole-in-one on the par 3, 214-yard eighth hole on Saturday at Copperhead.
His third-place finish guaranteed him a spot in the Shell Houston Open, set for March 31 thru April 3.
Stallings birdied three of five holes on the back side on the final day to grab a share of the lead, but a double-bogey on the par-four 16th knocked him off the pace. He parred the final two holes to wrap up third place.
Heading into the Shell Open, Stallings has made the cut in two of seven tournaments, and has winnings of $385,261.
