The Playhouse box office hit, Duck Hunter Shoots Angel, sponsored by Stonehaus Winery, has only six more performances, June 30, July 2, 8, 9, 12 and 14, on the Playhouse mainstage.
The show has won five Nashville BroadwayWorld.com awards, including Best Play, Best Director-Donald Fann, Best Actor-Jason Ross, Best Lighting Design-Tonry Lathroum, and Best Set Design-John Fionte. Nashville based critic Jeffrey Ellis calls the production and Mitch Albon’s play “funny and heartwarming”, and says “Duck Hunter will make you laugh out loud, consider deep and philosophical questions and, perhaps, even shed a few tears.”
Playhouse favorite Jason Ross (Smoke, My Fair Lady) and Billboard top-ten Nashville songwriter Bobby Taylor (Smoke) play brothers Duwell and Duane Early, Alabama good-‘ol-boys who rarely bag a duck, but think they’ve accidentally shot (gulp!) “a celestial being.” As the boys debate their fate, they’re chased by Daniel Black and Michael Ruff as a know-it-all tabloid reporter and his college-grad photographer, two Yankees wary of what might lurk, deep in the swamps of darkest Alabama. Ellis calls Ross and Taylor “superb…very moving…impressive.”
CCP rates the show “PG-13” and Playhouse Producing Director Jim Crabtree adds “This rating is for the “good-ol boy” mildly adult conversation, plus a little wisecracking about down-to-earthier topics. Duck Hunter is full of humor, wonder and spirit, so, we want everyone to know it’s a little quirky, but we know our audience will love it and talk about it (proven by the 8 week extension last season). We think it’s a wonderful, discussion-prompting show for families, and even older children,—including some junior high wisecrackers.”
“There is much to amuse you, a lot that will induce laughter, but the story effortlessly pulls the unsuspecting theater-goers in, coming upon you unawares,” noted Jeffrey Ellis.
