If your family enjoys the outdoors and being on and around the water, you are going to love this new event hosted by Meadow Park Lake. The annual Meadow Park Lake Waterfest & Family Fun Day will be held on Saturday, July 23, from 3 to 8 p.m. “There will be activities for every age,” Marlene Potter, Meadow Park Manager said. “We are planning several different kinds of boat races utilizing canoes, small boats and kayaks, and there will be instructors on hand to show people how to use small crafts. The boat races will be team events, and we are hoping to pair up fathers and mothers with sons or daughters.”
There will be numerous booths and educational nature exhibits and there will be group tours of the lake on pontoon boats. Meadow Park Lake is home to bald eagles which are seen on a regular basis. Otters and beavers also live on the lake.
There will be live music, food and free ice cream, and it has become a family favorite for those who enjoy being on the water.
Fishing Derby
The lake is also the site for another event, this one has been on the calendar for several years, and is very popular with the kids. It is the Kid’s Fishing Derby held June 11th. It is an opportunity for children of all ages to get a feel for fishing and winning prizes for their catch. This is one of Crossville’s most popular summer events, and is held on the same day as Tennessee’s free fishing day. Sponsors are City of Crossville, TWRA and Veolla.
Fireworks Show
Speaking of popular events, July 4th brings the City-sponsored July 4th Fireworks Show, which begins around 9 p.m. (or just after dark). Attendance figures in the 10,000 category have been said to come to town for this spectacle. “You can see it from all over town,” Marketing Director Billy Loggins said. “People have their favorite place to park their cars, many gathering with their friends at the same place.” The local radio stations play patriotic music while the fireworks are going off. It is a very impressive display.
Carrie Hassler & the Soul Survivors will be in concert at the City’s Centennial Park, beginning at 6:30 p.m. There will be inflatables for the kids and concessions. But the big draw is one of the biggest firework shows in the mid-state.
If you are planning a concert, a fundraiser, a family reunion with music, whatever your need, The Palace Theatre in downtown Crossville and the Spirit Broadband Amphitheater are available for rent. Call 484-6133 to schedule your venue and your event.
Friday Night Concerts
Spirit Broadband’s Amphitheater will once again be the venue for Friday Night Concert Series featuring local and regional bands. Spectators may bring their own lawn chairs, blankets, etc. and find their place in the grass. The music starts at 6:30 each Friday night in the series. This year, concerts have been planned for June 24, July 22, and August 12th. This year, immediately following the concert, will be a movie, sponsored by Crimestoppers.
Cumberland County’s award-winning County Fair dominates outdoor fun for 10 days in August and music events at the city-owned Palace Theatre are booked every weekend through next summer.
Golf Tournaments
There are several great events taking place in Crossville this summer, but it is the city-sponsored golf tournaments that continue to create the most excitement. “We are known as the Golf Capital of Tennessee, due in part to the half million rounds played here annually. But we are also building quite a reputation by hosting Tennessee championships in three state-wide tournaments,” said Crossville Marketing Director Billy Loggins.
Sr. Men’s Open
The first big tournament of the year was held May 9-10 at Stonehenge Golf Club in Fairfield Glade, where 156 of the best senior golfers in the state gathered for the TPGA Sr. Men’s Championship.
Tennessee Women’s Open
July 28-30 will be the ladies’ turn, as Stonehenge will once again be the site for championship golf, as the 16th Annual Golf Capital of Tennessee Women’s Open Championship is set for Stonehenge Golf Club in Fairfield Glade. The City of Crossville is the host and primary purse sponsor for both the men’s and women’s tournaments.
“This is a much anticipated event for our community, and we look forward each year to host some of the best women golfers, from not only Tennessee, but some of the best in the country,” Loggins said. “We are proud to partner with the TGA, the Fairfield Glade golf staff, and the Glade community, all working together to make this event special.”
This will be the 7th year for the tournament to be held at Stonehenge Golf Course in Fairfield Glade. It is the 12th straight year for the City of Crossville to host this prestigious event.
Stonehenge Golf Club is built in such a way that you can bring your own lawn chair and sit on the hill overlooking the 18th green, and watch every foursome finish. Stonehenge Grille and Pro Shop are just a few steps away, and between golf and good food, you can spend your time comfortably. There is even a new deck overlooking the 18th green where you can eat and watch golf at the same time.
Father-Son Championship
A three-team playoff was needed to determine last year’s Tennessee Father-Son Championship which was conducted at Stonehenge Golf Club in Fairfield Glade. The playoff consisted of first round leaders Trey and Bryce Lewis, Bryan and Bryce Kendrick and five-time champions of the event, Paul and Wes Korth. Trey and Bryce Lewis were eliminated on the first playoff hole, and when Paul and Wes Korth both made par on the second playoff hole, they were crowned champions of the 35th Annual Tennessee Father-Son Championship.
Paul and Wes Korth fired a final round of 75 points to finish at 142 and claim their spot in the playoff. Theis marked their sixth win in this event and fifth out of the last seven years. They also won this championship in 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2012.
The Tennessee Father-Son Championship uses a modified Stableford Scoring format which awards points based on each player’s score for the hole. The team score is the combined point total of both the father and the son.
