The Cumberland County Playhouse is happy to announce that in cooperation with the Tennessee Holocaust Commission and the Nashville Ballet they will present three special performances of The Anne Frank Ballet (inspired by the historic book Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl) on Monday, May 7, at 9:00 and 11:00am, and 7:30pm.
The ballet – presented as a special benefit for the Tennessee Holocaust Commission – will provide a unique opportunity for Playhouse audiences to experience Anne Frank’s timeless, tragic story in a dramatically new form: the 45-minute Anne Frank Ballet includes a cast of five dancers portraying Peter van Pels, Margot Frank and three metaphorical “sides” to Anne’s personality.
“We have such a complex picture of Anne thanks to her openness throughout her diary, that we wanted to provide the audience with a portrait of each component of her personality,” Nashville Ballet Director of Artistic Operations Sharyn Mahoney said. “By casting three different dancers as Anne, we can help the audience learn about her conflicting emotions and experiences during her life.”
Through its partnership with Nashville Ballet and the Tennessee Holocaust Commission, the Playhouse hopes to further the Commission’s goal to remind audiences that prejudice, hatred and violence, as manifested in the Holocaust and other genocides, lead to the destruction of a humane society.
After the performance, audience members will have the opportunity to participate in a post-show discussion with local Holocaust survivors, liberators and the performers. A video produced by the Tennessee Holocaust Commission will be shown after the performance and an exhibit of Holocaust-related materials will be on display in the lobby.
