Facebook lets you stay in touch with family, friends and . . . can help boost your business

BY CODY YOUNG - NMS Social Media Director

I was recently told about a friend of mine who has discovered the newest way to stay in contact with our friends and family — Facebook.

Before she discovered this new way of communication, she used a decades-old one: she picked up the telephone and called her friend, often resulting in a conversation of a few hours.

They would talk about their jobs, kids, family, and how they had been doing, since they no longer lived close to one another. However, once they both made accounts on Facebook, their phone conversations ended. Now they can keep in constant contact with one another and view each otherʼs lives in an entirely new way. So youʼre probably wondering “what is Facebook?” Well, let me explain.

Facebook is a “social networking” site intended to connect friends, family and business associates. It is the largest social networking site in the world. In fact, if Facebook were a country, it would be the 4th largest on the planet.

Facebook was created in 2004 by Harvard college student, Mark Zuckerberg. It was to be used as a tool for college students to stay in contact with their peers. But after only being in existence for 9 months, it had already grown to 100 million users. Social media or “social networking” is now being called by many the biggest thing to happen since the Industrial Revolution.

As a Facebook user, you create a profile page that shows your friends, family, and network information about yourself. Then you can choose to include a picture of yourself in your profile, and you can also include the following information: status, photos, hobbies, education, work, religion, political views, quotes, favorite sports teams, music, movies, television shows, and your contact information.

Sharing photos

One of the most popular features of Facebook is the ability to share photographs from your camera or cell phone. Pictures from your cell phone can be instantly put on your profile page. There is an unlimited amount of storage for pictures, which makes it perfect for you to keep your friends and family updated on important events in your life.

Facebook allows you to stay constantly connected with the people in your life in a new, personal way. Imagine how nice it would be to see your grandchildren’s prom pictures the day of prom, rather than days later. All you need is a Facebook account and a computer – thatʼs it!

Facebook can also be beneficial in the business world. Social Media is currently seen as the future of marketing, and in my opinion, it will replace direct mail in the next couple of years. Putting your business online is extremely important, especially in the realm of social media.

Why? This will allow you to directly find consumers who purchase your goods or services. A Facebook page or ad will actually find people who fit your ideal consumer profile – based on age, gender, location, and likes/dislikes on the users profile page.
